All About Nissan Belts and Hoses

Your vehicle has many different moving parts, whether it's a car, a truck, an SUV, or a van. Belts and hoses help move them all. Belts do it mechanically, and hoses do it hydraulically (meaning, using liquid pressure).

There are several kinds of belts. Serpentine belts, drive belts (also known as V-belts), and timing belts are just a few examples. The former two are responsible for moving parts in the AC system, alternator, power steering, and more. The latter turns the crankshaft and camshaft, coordinating the engine's valves and pistons in the process.

There are more than a few kinds of hoses, too -- too many to name them all, in fact. A couple prime examples are radiator hoses and heater core hoses. The former move coolant (antifreeze) between the radiator and engine. The latter send hot coolant through the heater to help warm the vehicle's cabin.

Other examples include fuel hoses and brake hoses. The former connects the gas tank and engine in older Nissan models, while the latter sends brake fluid to the brake calipers. There are even air intake hoses, which help regulate the engine's oxygen levels, as well as hoses for parts like positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valves and oil coolers.

Unfortunately, sometimes, belts and hoses go bad. Luckily, there are symptoms to tell you that's happening. They include being unable to start your vehicle, the vehicle not running right, or its complete disablement. However, these are very general. More specific signs include visibly loose belts and hoses, obviously damaged ones, screeching or chirping sounds, fluid leaks, battery problems, and interior lighting malfunctions. Some of the worst symptoms, though, are a misfiring or overheating engine, not to mention general systems failures.

See any of these, and you should run an inspection and change any necessary belts and hoses ASAP. Otherwise, how often they need to be changed, you can find more info on in your owner's manual. It should tell you their mileage limits. Most hoses, however, you should replace every 4 years.

Before buying new ones, though, you should make sure they're genuine OEM. Nissan manufactures its belts and hoses to spec for its models, after all. That essentially guarantees they'll fit and work with yours.
