All About Nissan Air Filters

Whether you're driving a car, a truck, an SUV, or a van, your Nissan vehicle has two kinds. They both capture airborne contaminants. They're usually made of either cotton, synthetic paper, metal, or foam, the shape of the media is either circular, cylindrical, or flat, and they're almost always pleated to trap pollutants better. Some media are even semi-permanent, meaning you can wash and reuse them many times before replacement is required.

One type is the engine air filter. It helps keep dirt, sand, and road debris out of the air intake, and thus, out of the rest of the motor. The other type is the cabin air filter. It helps keep mold spores, pollen, and other allergens out of the ducts and off the vents in the heater and air conditioner. In a way, this is like what fuel filters do for fuel systems and what oil filters do for engine parts.

Unfortunately, either kind can go bad. Luckily, there are signs that'll tell you that's happening. Look for clogs, obstructed airflow, and worn or damaged media first, along with a Check Engine light or other warnings on the dashboard; they're the most obvious. Other symptoms of bad air filters range from black exhaust smoke and engine misfires and power loss to unusual engine noises and trouble accelerating. The less obvious signs include worsening fuel economy, whistling sounds and other abnormal noises coming from the vehicle's vents, and dirty or stale smells in-cabin.

See any of these, and your air filters should be replaced. Otherwise, take care of it every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, no more than every 30,000 miles at the most. That's once a year. Before you order new air filters, though, make sure they're genuine OEM. They'll come guaranteed compatible with the Nissan model you drive. Aftermarket air filters can't always promise the same.
